Hurstville’s Greek Night Market

Hurstville City Council is hosting a series of night markets, the first of which kicks off this Saturday March 14. Each will take on a different cultural theme, and the inaugural event is a celebration of all things Greek. From 5pm–9pm MacMahon street will be closed to traffic and transformed into a Hellenic festival of music, dance and street food provided by Sydney’s first Greek street-food trailer, Feed The Greek, launching on the night. Snack on a pork yiros or lamb souvlaki while listening to live tunes by international Greek DJ Krazy Kon.

HURSTVILLE'S night markets are set to go ahead after the council approved $98,500 to cover costs.
The markets will be held on the second Saturday of every month from March to May and the costs will be covered by the working capital surplus fund.
They were proposed by Hurstville mayor Con Hindi last October and will be reviewed after they have been operating for three months.

Cr Hindi envisaged the night markets would be a celebration of the Hurstville local government area's diversity and would be used as a vehicle to bring various ethnic communities together.
"The markets will promote social cohesion through education and will provide an opportunity for residents and visitors to experience first-hand the richness and diversity of each cultural group that constitute the Hurstville community," he said.

The markets will centre around food, entertainment and attractions for families.
Each market will focus on a different ethnic community. It is expected the March market will focus on the Greek community, while April will centre on the Indian and Nepalese communities while the May market will be about the Middle East.
